Moeller Home Building Committee
Meeting - January 15, 2004
1:30 p.m. Community Center

Members present were Chairperson Perry Cornwall, Melvin McOmber, Brian O'Connor, Chief Building Official; Kathleen Bagley, Director, Recreation and Parks Department and Laura Briggs, Director, Nature Center. Staff members present were Salvatore Cucia, Assistant Director, Recreation and Parks Department and Maggie Downie, Assistant Director, Nature Center.

Chairperson Cornwall opened the meeting at 1:30 p.m. Nature Center Director Laura Briggs introduced Maggie Downie as the new part-time Assistant Director for the Nature Center. Members welcomed Maggie to the meeting.

  1. Public Comments.

    No public comments.

  2. Minutes - January 8, 2004.

    A correction was made to the minutes. Under 3 B it stated that the next meeting of the Committee will be on Tuesday, January 15. The correction needed to read Thursday, January 15. A motion was made to approve the minutes with the correction by Melvin McOmber and seconded by Brian O'Connor. Motion passed unanimously.

  3. Design for Moeller Home.

    Ms. Bagley distributed draft schematic of the Moeller Home building. Chairperson Cornwall opened the discussion for suggestions for design of the Moeller Home. He explained that staff will meet with the architect on Friday, January 16, 2004, to present the input from the Building Committee members. Members discussed the priorities for the building. The priorities are listed below:

    1. Bringing the building up to meet code requirements and ADA accessibility requirements.
    2. Replacing the roof.
    3. Open areas for program space.
    4. Design for the animals.
    5. Storage and office space.

    Other items Committee members discussed for consideration of the building design: air conditioning, storage in the attic, high ceiling, electrical wiring for computers and animal cage electricity, making the building energy efficient, reviewing the downstairs basement for a room to have a small workshop for building animal cages, investigate noise from the street, develop climate control for the animals, gift shop, potential for security cameras in the rooms and security alarm for the building, a washer/dryer in the basement and dishwasher in the animal care room, wiring for the phone system, wall space that could handle art exhibits, utilize room columns or other places throughout the building to recognize donors to the Building Fund, a small kitchen area for staff with a microwave and refrigerator and refrigerator in the animal care room. Chairperson Cornwall asked Ms. Bagley to bring these items to the attention of the architect.

  4. New Business.

    Ms. Bagley distributed a list of future meeting dates for the Building Committee.

  5. Next Meeting will be Thursday, February 5, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at the Community Center.

  6. Adjournment.

    Meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.
