Frank Meunier said things are moving along at First Church Village. They had their annual picnic today to celebrate First Church's 29th anniversary since opening in 1977.
Christine Taylor said the Seniors aren't meeting in the summer. The next meting is in September. She reminded everyone that the Dial-a-ride changes are effective July 5th.
Nancy Stillwell said the Social Services Department is not responsible for advertising for committees. Each committee should do that themselves although Social Services does refer residents to the town's committees when they feel it would be advantageous.
The Parks and Recreation Department has been gearing up for camp, which starts on Monday. The Special Olympics Program already started a few weeks ago. The State Summer Olympic Games went well. They were held at Southern and Wethersfield had about 24 athletes participate.
The summer picnic will be held Wednesday, July 12th from 5:00-7:30 p.m. at Millwoods. If it rains the picnic will be held at the Pitkin Community Center. Please contact Natalie at the Park and Recreation Department if you wish to bring something.
Frank Meunier Jr. suggested that the Wethersfield Advisory Committee donate $60 towards the picnic expenses.
Frank Meunier Jr. said there needs to be improvements on return transportation services. Sometimes they need to be reminded to come pick the passengers up. Also some of the wheelchair vans are hard for ambulatory passengers to access and the ceilings are very low.
Judith Tacey agreed that the returns have been slow. They have had to call more than once to get picked up. Waiting times can be up to 1-2 hours long. Christine Taylor will pass this information along to Nancy Stillwell.
The Resource Booklet is coming along great. It is now over 60 pages long. Thanks to Jim Grise for all his hard work and dedication. He received a quote from Sir Speedy Printing of $ 325.00 to print 100 copies. Each copy printed in a binder for the Library would cost $6.42. This Resource Booklet will also be accessible on line through the Town of Wethersfield's website. Carol Keenan said there are available funds in escrow to cover the costs of this booklet.
Frank Meunier said he would look into the cost of getting some copies printed in Braille.
Kathleen Sullivan suggested contacting the Wethersfield Life so they could do a story on the WACPD and the completion of this Resource Booklet. This would be a great way to promote the committee. Once the booklets are printed they will be available in the Library and Town Manager's office as well as the Group Homes in town.
Carol Keenan brought up a concern that the new handicapped ramp accessing the Wethersfield Library is not covered. She asked Steve Kirsche to bring it up at the next Town Council meeting.
The National Federation of the Blind Convention will be held in Dallas, Texas the first week of July.
**The next meeting of the WACPD will be held September 20, 2006. At that meeting we will concentrate on setting new goals for the upcoming year.
Frank Lane will be leaving the Committee. If anyone knows someone who is interested in serving on the WACPD please have them contact the Town Clerk's office.
