SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Thursday, September 18, 2008
Present: Kathy Bagley, Estelle Knurek, Kathi Liberman, Claire Mehan, Joe Mehan, Jane-Helen Ross, Gerry Seklecki, Nancy Stilwell, Carol Tedone.
Public Attending: Lisa Galipo, Resident Services Coordinator, Executive Square.
The meeting was called to order at 3:00 pm by Chair Kathi Liberman.
Minutes: The minutes from the last meeting were not available.
Old Business: There was no Old Business.
Reports:
- Council: $2,000 has been received from the Town of Wethersfield for our 2008 - 2009 budget. Kathi Liberman distributed a revised list of Senior Citizens Advisory Committee members.
- Wethersfield Housing Authority: Kathi Liberman reported that everything was status quo.
- Clergy: absent.
- AARP: Jane Helen Ross reported that the AARP Chapter Treasurer resigned recently for medical reasons. A search is underway for a new Treasurer.
- Elderly Services Coordinator/Municipal Agent: Christine Taylor was absent from the meeting, but provided a short list of items which Kathi Liberman presented:
- A reminder: November 15 - Dec. 31 is "Open Enrollment" for Medicare Part D.
- Beware of the growing number of scams that seem to targeting the elderly. Do NOT give out your credit card or bank account numbers over the phone.
- The Department on Aging has a web site for Long Term Care information: www.CT.Gov/LongTermCare
- Some companies (CL&P) are offering rebates on new furnaces, air conditioners and water heaters. Be sure to ask about these before making your purchase.
- People with Disabilities: Kathi Liberman reported, in Chris Taylor absence, that a Summer Picnic was held on July 9 at the Pitkin Community Center.
- Wethersfield Seniors Club: Carol Tedone reported:
- A memorial brick was purchased by the club in June for the walkway around the entrance to the new 9/11 Memorial Sport Center.
- A Summer Bar-B-Que was held in August for member s of the Seniors Club.
- The annual Craft Fair is scheduled for October 8 from 9 - 1 in the lobby of the Community Center. The public is invited.
- Social Services/Senior Center: Donna Mattison absent. Kathi Liberman reported the following in Donna's absence:
- Approval was requested for the continuance of the monthly ads in the Rare Reminder. We usually run ten (10) half-page ads and two (2) full page ads over the course of a year. A motion was made and passed.
- A suggestion was made to have Lynn McPhelimy (author of "In the Checklist of Life") be the guest speaker for a program in Spring 2009. No decision was made.
- Parks & Rec: Kathy Bagley reported that the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center opened officially last week. Logistics and programs are still being worked out for the Fitness Room. Seven (7) lap top computers, a printer, and a SmartBoard will make up the Computer Room for use by Wethersfield students.
- Nancy Stilwell reported:
- Her office is swamped with shut-off notices from the utility companies. A fund-raiser to benefit the Fuel Bank is planned for October 16 at The Bean & Grape, 251 Main St., Wethersfield. Tickets at $25 per person will be available from her office shortly.
- Funding for the ITN Central CT program did not materialize. The entire program is on-hold at the moment.
The next meeting of the SCAC will be held on October 16, 2008.
