Civil Unions were approved by the Legislature as of October 1, 2005. The Office of the Town Clerk issues a Civil Union Certificate and maintains them as a Vital Record.
Only those parties of the same gender may obtain a Civil Union Certificate. All of the rules that apply for a Marriage License apply to Civil Unions. They cost $30 and $10 for a certified copy. You may apply in the Town in which one of the parties resides or in the Town where the ceremony will take place. The certificate may be obtained anytime, up to 65 days before it is to take place. You must know the date, place, and name, address and telephone number of the person joining you in either a Marriage or Civil Union. [Wethersfield Justices of the Peace are listed online.]
