In an effort to expedite the permit review and approval process the town offers permit assistance services designed to help simplify the review process for obtaining land use and building permits and to help get you through the process in a timely and efficient manner. We have put together an interdepartmental team made up of professionals from Economic Development, Planning, Health, Zoning, Building, Engineering, Redevelopment and Fire Prevention to offer you their expertise and friendly and efficient permit assistance services.

The Permit Assistance Service has been specifically designed to provide a central location for your convenience and to allow for more efficient customer service. Staff members are on hand to assist you at most times during our normal business hours. If you would like to set up an appointment we can be reached at (860) 721-2837.

If you are not quite sure what services you need, come visit the Planning and Economic Development Department. We are located on the 2nd floor of Town Hall to the left as you exit the elevator or main stairwell. Please enter the office and our helpful staff will assist you with your permitting needs.

Depending on your project, certain building construction, renovation or re-use may require different types of permits and compliance with different state and local codes, regulations and ordinances. Some projects may only require a building permit, where other activities may require the submission of detailed plans and the review of certain town boards and commissions.

We offer you guidance to help you through the permitting process. Our staff can help identify which approvals are required, advise as to what plans and details are required, assist you as you go through the process and help the process proceed smoothly. Our goal is to make sure all the required permits are in place when you are ready to open your business. We have created A Guide To Land Use Permits which is a handbook designed to detail the various review processes and contact information for various staff and departments involved in the permit processes. Additionally, the town offers a pre-application review process and meeting through the Planning and Economic Development Department that provides an informal review opportunity that allows staff to meet and review preliminary plans prior to the submission of a formal application. The pre-application review process allows feedback at the earliest possible stages of a project.
