Explorer Post

The Wethersfield Police Explorer Program began in September 1983. It is a program for youths aged 14 – 21 years of age who are interested in law enforcement. At the biweekly meetings, which are held on Thursday evenings, the explorers learn different aspects of police work, from fingerprinting to motor vehicle stops to self-defense. The explorers are also certified in CPR and first aid.

The police explorers are given opportunities to ride along on patrol with Wethersfield Police Officers. This gives the police explorers hands-on experience in police work. It also gives the explorers the opportunity to interact with various officers who serve as role models to the explorers.

The Wethersfield Police Explorers assist civic organizations with traffic control during various events throughout the year, including the Wethersfield Weekend, the Corn Fest and the Greater Hartford Open.

The Wethersfield Police Explorers attend the Explorer Police Academy, which is a one-week program held in the summer. The academy is broken down into four different phases in which the explorers are taught law enforcement related classes by Police Officers from throughout the New England area. The academy is attended by approximately 300 youth from five different states.

Recruitment is usually done on an ongoing basis at the middle and high school levels. Each explorer candidate must pass a background investigation and probationary period. Anyone interested in joining the Wethersfield Police Explorers should contact Detective Thomas Regan at (860) 721-2763.
